Leadership – General

What really is Leadership?

Recently, while speaking to a small group, I raised a question: “Who do you consider an example of a great leader?” The answers surprised me. I kept thinking about this for several days. I decided to go back and review all the definitions I had learned over the years on leadership. The one that truly stands out is that of Dr. Robert Steven Kaplan (not to be confused with Robert S. Kaplan, the co-creator of Balanced Scorecard).

I will never forget my first day in the leadership class at OPM program at Harvard Business School in 2013. Dr. Kaplan started by defining leadership as:

“Figuring out your beliefs and having the guts/ability to act on them in such a way that it adds value to others.”

One key aspect of this definition is especially important: “adds value to others“. With this you can easily filter out the chaff in the crowded field of leadership.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said:

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”

Now please consider Dr. Kaplan’s definition and try to answer these questions:

  • Who do you consider your best example of a good leader?
  • Are you a good leader?
