Habit 1: Be Proactive (1/4) – Reactive/Proactive Behaviours
Last year, everyone in ISA (then) participated in a workshop –
“7 Habits of Highly Effective People”
by Stephen Covey. We all agreed that we learned so much from this seminar.
We now want to make sure that the lessons are internalized as we practice them in our personal lives and at work. To achieve this, we decided that we will focus on one Habit per month beginning from April.
So this April, we will focus on Habit 1: Be Proactive.I want to use this space to share my thoughts on Habit 1.
There are 4 things to consider under Habit 1
1. Reactive/Proactive Behaviours
2. Stimulus, Choice & Response
3. Circle of Influence & Circle of Concern
4. Transition to Proactive Behavior1. Reactive/Proactive
It doesn’t take much to REACT. Act as your impulse directs you – eat, drink and smoke whatever your instinct tells you… If someone gets into your way, give it back to them squarely. If something doesn’t work, pin the blame on someone else. Start your day with no plans in mind, and you may end up chatting on Facebook all day. Wait until you are told what to do. Look at your objective only at the time of appraisal and blame external factors for not achieving them….A PROACTIVE behavior is anticipatory and self-initiated. It involves acting in advance of a future situation. It means taking control and making things happen. Proactive people generally do not need to be “pushed”, nor do they require detailed instructions. They weigh the consequences and take appropriate actions within their limits.
What steps will you take right now to stop being REACTIVE and start being PROACTIVE?
